With the arrival of colder weather, fashion enthusiasts set out to find new winter shoes, but some styles can turn out to be a complete mistake. The wrong choice can lead to discomfort and unnecessary expenses. On Instagram, Ukrainian stylist Olena Shevchenko explains which shoes are better to avoid this winter and what to pay attention to before making a purchase.
The stylist emphasises that before buying, it's important to consider several key features that directly affect warmth, comfort, and safety during the winter season.
Thin soles: Sure way to lose warmth
One of the most common mistakes is buying shoes with soles that are too thin. Winter footwear should have a sole of at least 3 centimetres to provide proper insulation.
Thin soles cool down quickly when in contact with ice or snow, and even warm socks won't prevent your feet from getting cold. Additionally, such soles are less stable on slippery surfaces, increasing the risk of falls.
When choosing winter boots, it's best to opt for models with thick, textured soles as they ensure warmth while also providing cushioning.
Too-tight or narrow shoes: Direct path to cold feet
Another common mistake is buying winter shoes that fit too snugly. In cold weather, feet require space for proper blood circulation as well as for warm layers such as socks or tights.
If you wear a size 38 in the summer, consider sizes 39 or even 40 for winter. Cramped toes and limited space in shoes cause feet to get cold much faster.
Tight shoes also wear out inner materials faster and create discomfort while walking.
Shoes without proper support: Risk of injury on icy surfaces
Winter conditions often come with icy roads, so reliable foot support is just as important as warmth. Uggs featuring no ankle support or no-lace shoes may be unsuitable during icy or snowy conditions.
Without stability, it's easy to twist your ankle, especially on slippery roads or when walking quickly. The best choice is shoes with laces, fasteners, or firm side panels that keep the foot properly aligned.
Choosing the right shoes not only helps maintain your health but also avoids unnecessary spending on new pairs during the season. Following these simple rules will make winter more comfortable and safe.
