Seven foods that boost your immunity against viruses
Some foods contain phytonutrients that positively impact the body and play a role in the prevention and treatment of diseases.
What are phytonutrients?
Phytonutrients (phytochemicals) are compounds or chemical substances of plant origin that have beneficial effects on the body.
These include carotenoids, flavonoids, and isothiocyanates, which can affect the body in various ways and act as antioxidants or anti-inflammatories. They provide immune support, regulate hormonal balance, and perform many other important functions.
Many phytonutrients have antioxidant properties that help prevent cell damage throughout the body.
Phytonutrients can also perform other bioactive functions to strengthen health. Some can positively affect the immune system and hormones.
Additionally, they can act as antibacterial or antiviral agents.
Research has shown that several phytonutrients reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease.
Where to find them
They are found in colorful fruits and vegetables, as phytonutrients give plants their rich color, distinctive taste, and aroma.
Phytonutrients can be considered part of the immune system as they provide protection against viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
Ukrainian nutritionist Olga Bezuhla named the foods that contain phytonutrients:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Whole grains (such as brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, barley, wheat berries, whole grain bread)
- Tea
- Nuts and seeds (walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, and flaxseeds)
- Beans
- Spices
“If you want to be healthy and enjoy your meals, try to make your plate as colorful as possible,” the expert added.
It's important to know that no supplement can replace the benefits of a healthy diet.
