Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, during a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, complained about the difficult situation for his country caused by Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Blic reports.

The Serbian leader addressed the Kremlin chief in Russian and thanked him for the "warm welcome" during his visit to Moscow on May 9.

Vučić claimed that cooperation with Russia at all levels is very important for Serbia. In particular, he highlighted energy, especially gas supplies, as a crucial sector.

"I want to say that since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, Serbia has been in a difficult situation, trying to cope with the pressure, but we still managed to maintain a principled position regarding the Russian Federation, and we will continue to fight for Serbia’s independence, as well as try to remain the only country in Europe that has not imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation,” Vučić added.

He expressed confidence that Serbia and Russia would be able to strengthen relations at the highest level.

Sanctions against Russia

Serbia refuses to support European Union sanctions against Russia, despite its aspiration to join the bloc.

In particular, in July, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić assured that his country did not plan to impose restrictions against Russia.

According to the Serbian leader, his country adheres to a principled policy of neutrality.
