Serbian President Vučić announces he will step down

On September 27, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced his resignation and, according to PTC, revealed the reason for his decision.
As the Serbian leader explained, he is stepping down from the presidency to take part in parliamentary elections.
Vučić emphasized that he wants to do so as an ordinary citizen.
After addressing the nation, Vučić signed his resignation at the Administration of the President of Serbia.
He also announced that the first round of presidential elections would be held by the end of December 2026, while parliamentary elections will take place earlier, on October 25.
Amid his resignation, Vučić admitted that managing Serbia's foreign policy had been difficult.
He also predicted it would not be easy in the future either.
"Every meeting, almost every meeting over the past four and a half years in Europe, was torture. Every one. I was not comfortable at any of them. Because at every one, the first question was: 'Why haven't you imposed sanctions on Russia?' Everywhere. It was also difficult with the Russians... In the end, Serbia suffers. Nowhere was it simple or easy for us. It won't be in the future either," Vučić complained.
Aleksandar Vučić became president of Serbia on May 31, 2017, when he took the oath of office and officially assumed the presidency.
In 2022, Vučić was reelected to a second presidential term, and on May 31, 2022, he was sworn in again.
Thus, by September 2026, Vučić had served as president of Serbia for more than nine years.
It was also recently reported that Vučić dissolved the Serbian parliament.
Street protests had also taken place in the country recently, with demonstrators calling for the president's resignation.
