Vučić to dissolve parliament and sets date for snap elections in Serbia

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that early parliamentary elections in the country will be held in October. At the same time, he will officially announce the decision to dissolve the National Assembly and call the election at noon on September 9, N1 reports.
Vučić confirms election date
Vučić confirmed to reporters the date of the country's early parliamentary elections. The vote will be held on October 25, 2026. Tomorrow, he will sign a decree dissolving the National Assembly and a decision calling early parliamentary elections.
Vučić had previously named two possible dates for the early vote — October 18 or 25. He has now confirmed that the election will take place on October 25. Under Serbian law, between the announcement of the election and election day, 45 to 60 days must pass.
Reason for parliament's dissolution
The early election is taking place amid prolonged political and social protests in Serbia. Mass demonstrations began after a canopy collapsed at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, killing 16 people. The protests have been accompanied by demands to hold those responsible accountable and fight corruption.
At the same time, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party previously nominated Vučić as a candidate for prime minister if his political force wins the election. Thus, the upcoming vote could mark a new start for him as prime minister.
Reaction to the burial of the 'Bosnian butcher'
Speaking about the strong reaction to Ratko Mladic's funeral, Vučić said that he "expected all of this."
"This funeral served as an alibi for many in the region to show how much they hate Serbia and how much they hate its successes," Vučić said.
Context of Vucic's statements
We previously reported that Vucic was planning to resign in order to take another position. Back in June, he said he was considering running for prime minister.
These statements came amid months of large-scale protests in Serbia over the 2024 disaster, when 16 people were killed after structures at the railway station collapsed. People believe this was not simply an accident but the result of systemic corruption in the country.
