Serbia says BRICS could become alternative to EU
For Serbia, the BRICS international coalition offers an alternative to the European Union. Moreover, the country plans to send its representative to the upcoming summit in Kazan, according to Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin.
According to the official, if BRICS has become attractive to other states, Serbia should also take note. He further confirmed that Serbia would participate in the BRICS summit in Kazan from October 22 to 24 by sending a representative.
"It would be irresponsible if we did not explore all possibilities, including BRICS membership. If BRICS is attractive to other countries, such as the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, or Türkiye, why should it be different for Serbia? There is no doubt that BRICS has become a real alternative to the European Union," said Vulin.
At the same time, the official acknowledged that while he is a Eurosceptic, most of the Serbian population still aspires to EU membership.
What is known about BRICS
BRICS is an international coalition of five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Initially, the group was known as BRIC, as it did not include South Africa. However, after the country joined in 2010, the group adopted the name BRICS.
This international bloc includes countries with rapidly growing economies. It aims to strengthen economic cooperation, increase political influence on the global stage, and develop alternative financial mechanisms. These mechanisms are designed to operate independently of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
It’s also worth mentioning that The Morning reported yesterday that Sri Lanka officially applied for BRICS membership.
Additionally, Türkiye has expressed interest in joining the coalition. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently stated that his country’s bid to join BRICS does not imply a rejection of NATO membership, as these structures are not mutually exclusive.
