Over 10 years, AirPods have evolved from simple earbuds with tap controls into advanced gadgets capable of recognizing real-time user gestures. The latest lineup — including AirPods 4, Pro 2, and Pro 3 — has significantly expanded its set of hidden features thanks to the H2 audio chip, according to BGR.

The use of next-generation processors has enabled Apple to introduce features that once seemed futuristic.

Head movement control and Siri interaction

Thanks to the H2 chip, the earbuds can now physically detect” how the user responds to voice assistant prompts.

Answering calls: Instead of reaching for a smartphone or touching the earbuds, you can simply nod your head up and down to accept a call or reply to a message.

Rejecting calls: To decline a call, just shake your head from side to side.

Customization: In AirPods settings on iPhone, you can reassign a long press on the earbud stem to activate Siri instead of switching noise control modes.

Live Translation feature

One of the most unusual capabilities of modern AirPods is instant translation, activated by a physical gesture.

Starting translation: On AirPods 4 (with ANC), Pro 2, and Pro 3, simply press and hold both earbuds at the same time to activate live conversation translation.

AirPods Max 2 specifics: On the latest full-size model, you need to press and hold the noise control button next to the Digital Crown.

Offline mode: During first use, the system prompts you to download language packs to your iPhone, allowing translation to work without an internet connection.

Classic gestures and volume control

Apple has kept traditional control methods while improving their precision in newer models.

What’s improved:

  • Volume control: Pro models allow you to swipe up or down on the stem to adjust volume. This feature remains exclusive to the premium lineup.
  • Force sensor: Starting from the third generation, Apple replaced tap controls with force sensors that require a light squeeze of the stem, reducing accidental triggers.

To use all features, users should ensure their AirPods and iPhone software are updated to the latest version. Most settings are located in the main menu under the connected device, where gesture sensitivity can also be tested and adjusted.
