May 2026 continues to test weather-sensitive people. According to scientists’ forecasts, a series of moderate geomagnetic disturbances is expected from May 8 to 11 due to solar spot activity and coronal mass ejections.

RBC-Ukraine explains when peak activity is expected, how magnetic storms affect health, and how to protect your body during these days.

Magnetic storm forecast for May 8–11

According to data from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) and satellite monitoring systems, the activity schedule will look like this:

Based on information from international meteorological laboratories and solar monitoring satellites, the geomagnetic situation in Ukraine will remain generally stable:

May 8: Moderate solar activity is expected. The K-index will remain at the level of a moderate magnetic storm — K-index 4. Many people around the world may feel this impact.

May 9: Activity is expected to decrease to 3 points (K-index 3), with possible local increases to K-index 4 (moderate storm level). This level is usually felt only by weather-sensitive people as mild fatigue.

May 10: The magnetosphere will return to a stable state. Indicators will stay around 2 points.

May 11: The geomagnetic background will be minimal —1 to 2 points. The risk of headaches caused by solar activity will be virtually zero.

What is a magnetic storm?

During solar flares, tiny particles are ejected into space and collide at enormous speed with Earth’s magnetic shield. This collision causes disturbances that scientists call magnetic storms.

Weak and moderate storms usually affect weather-sensitive people, while strong geomagnetic storms can worsen the condition of almost anyone and may also disrupt communications, radio signals, and satellites.

How magnetic storms affect people

Scientists still debate the direct impact of solar activity on humans, but statistics from medical visits during “red-level” periods suggest that the body does react. The most common complaints include:

  • severe headaches and migraines
  • sudden spikes in blood pressure
  • joint pain and pain in old fracture areas
  • sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive drowsiness)
  • general weakness, reduced productivity, and poor concentration
  • increased anxiety and irritability

Who is most at risk?

The following groups are most vulnerable to geomagnetic storms:

  • weather-sensitive people
  • elderly individuals
  • pregnant women
  • people with chronic heart conditions, hypertension, or vegetative-vascular dystonia
  • people experiencing chronic stress or severe fatigue

How to protect yourself from magnetic storms: doctors’ advice

To minimize the negative impact of magnetic storms on the body, experts recommend following these simple rules from May 8 to 10:

Adjust your diet. Avoid fatty, spicy, and overly salty foods. Salt retains water in the body, which may trigger swelling and blood pressure spikes.

Stay hydrated. Drink more clean water or herbal teas such as mint, lemon balm, or chamomile.

Avoid stimulants. Minimize consumption of coffee, strong tea, and alcohol. These drinks put additional strain on the nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Sleep and rest. Get at least 7–8 hours of sleep per night. Try to go to bed before 11:00 p.m.

Physical activity. Replace intense gym workouts with calm walks outdoors. A contrast shower in the morning may help keep blood vessels toned.

Keep medications nearby. If you have chronic illnesses, make sure the necessary medications are easily accessible.
