In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, stress has become an inseparable part of everyday life for Ukrainians. However, dietitians and nutritionists are increasingly advising people to look for relief not only in pharmacies but also in their own kitchens.

European dietitian and trainer Rostyslav Romaniv explains which two popular spices can calm the nervous system almost as effectively as herbal remedies.

Dietitians are increasingly studying the impact of spices and aromatic herbs on the nervous system. Among the most promising products, Rostyslav Romaniv highlights oregano and cinnamon. However, he emphasizes that this is not a magic pill, but rather additional support for the body under constant psychological stress.

Oregano: more than just a pizza seasoning

Many people know oregano as a fragrant addition to Italian dishes. But dietitians suggest looking at it more broadly. Its main secret lies in its high concentration of carvacrol, a compound that directly influences emotional state.

How it works:

  • Support for happiness hormones
  • Studies show that carvacrol helps protect neurons and maintain stable levels of dopamine and serotonin — hormones responsible for good mood and motivation.
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Chronic stress often causes micro-inflammation in the body. Oregano acts as a powerful antioxidant, reducing these processes and easing the burden on the brain.

By the way, according to a study published on PMC, oregano extract can reduce anxiety symptoms and improve cognitive function under chronic stress.

Cinnamon: sweet calm for the brain

Cinnamon is traditionally associated with baked goods and hot drinks, but scientists and nutritionists are increasingly focusing on its potential effect on the nervous system. It contains polyphenols and antioxidants that may reduce inflammation and support brain function under stress. Chronic inflammation is considered one of the factors contributing to anxiety and emotional exhaustion.

How cinnamon helps calm the body:

  1. Blood sugar control. Sudden glucose spikes can cause feelings of anxiety and irritability. Cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar levels, which in turn helps balance emotions.
  2. Lower cortisol levels. The aroma of cinnamon (cinnamaldehyde) has a therapeutic effect. Even just inhaling its scent can subconsciously calm a person, while levels of the stress hormone cortisol begin to decrease.
  3. Improved cognitive function. Stress often causes brain fog. Cinnamon stimulates brain activity, helping improve focus and make decisions without panic.
