Scientists sound alarm: These everyday foods cause cancer and diabetes

Consumption of certain food preservatives widely used in industrial products may be linked to an increased risk of cancer and type 2 diabetes, according to professor and dietitian Oleh Shvets.
Which preservatives are linked to cancer risk
The first study found a multiple association between certain preservatives and the overall risk of cancer, as well as breast and prostate cancer. The focus is on nitrites and nitrates, substances widely used in the production of ham, bacon, sausages, and other processed meat products.
The strongest association was recorded between sodium nitrite and prostate cancer. According to researchers, this preservative increased the risk by about one third. At the same time, scientists stress that this represents a moderate increase in risk. By comparison, regular smoking raises the risk of lung cancer by more than 15 times.
Preservatives and the development of type 2 diabetes
The second study focused on the link between food additives and type 2 diabetes. Particular attention was drawn to potassium sorbate, a preservative used to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria in foods and beverages. Its consumption was associated with a doubled risk of developing diabetes.
What these conclusions are based on
Both studies rely on data from the large-scale NutriNet-Santé scientific project. As part of it, more than 100,000 French participants regularly completed detailed questionnaires over a long period, providing information about their diet, lifestyle, and health status.
What scientists recommend
Researchers emphasize that consuming foods with preservatives does not mean a person will inevitably develop disease. However, experts advise limiting the intake of such products and opting for foods with minimal technological processing.
It is also well established that certain factors, including consumption of processed meat and alcohol, have long been linked to an increased risk of cancer.
Will warning labels appear on packaging
Experts note that observational studies cannot prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, meaning further research is needed. If the findings are confirmed, products containing nitrates and nitrites may in the future receive special labeling warning of potential health risks.
