People with high blood pressure or at risk of it may benefit from adding certain vegetables to their diet. According to a nutritionist, this red vegetable contains valuable nutrients that can help reduce blood pressure.

Which vegetable can help lower high blood pressure?

Dr Michael Mosley and Professor Tim Spector recently discussed the topic on a BBC podcast, covering what foods are essential for staying healthy. According to both experts, beets are one standout for overall health. Both Mosley and Spector agree that this vegetable is loaded with beneficial nutrients.

According to Mosley, beets are rich in nitrates, which lead to the release of nitric oxide, widening blood vessels throughout the body.

Spector supported this statement, calling beets a prime example of genuinely therapeutic food. The expert emphasized that the vegetable lowers blood pressure. Due to controlled clinical trials, beets are proven to be much more effective and far more enjoyable than simply cutting out salt.

Beets' health benefits are backed by science

The experts' statements are also supported by scientific findings. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London found that a 250 ml glass of beet juice resulted in an average blood pressure reduction of about 8/4 mm Hg.

In many study participants, blood pressure levels returned to a safe range. A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition reached similar conclusions, noting that the nitrates in beet juice reduce systolic blood pressure, though not diastolic pressure, in patients with hypertension.

Beyond lowering blood pressure, beets promote gut health and may reduce the risk of heart disease, making them a worthwhile addition to your plate.
