Schumer aims to secure retirement benefits for public service workers
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is encouraging the Senate to pass the Social Security Fairness Act to guarantee US pensioners retirement benefits before the new Congress assembles, according to The Hill.
Schumer urged associate members to help secure 15 Republican votes needed to pass the bill, which has already gained bipartisan support in the House. The legislation aims to withdraw the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset, which unfairly reduce benefits for public service workers and their spouses, according to the estimates of some critics.
In his post on social platform X Schumer wrote: "In America, there’s a basic promise that if you work hard all your life, play by the rules and contribute year after year, then you deserve a secure retirement! That’s why I am doing everything I can to pass the Social Security Fairness Act. And the Senate GOP needs to join us."
While Schumer is confident about bipartisan support in the Senate, the deadline is looming over, as they have time only until December 20.
At the same time, some conservatives have already raised concerns about the bill, as its approximate cost is $190 billion for more than 10 years.
