US President Donald Trump may impose tariffs on goods from EU countries. The European Commission could respond within hours, according to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an interview with RND.

Commenting on Trump’s threats, Chancellor Scholz stated that the global economy needs fewer, not more, trade barriers.

Scholz emphasized his commitment to ensuring European countries remain united as the European Union and make it clear that "the EU, with its 450 million residents, is strong and capable of acting."

When asked if Germany could impose tariffs on American goods, he said he relies on cooperation rather than confrontation.

"Our hand is extended (for a handshake), because tariffs benefit no one. If the US proceeds with such actions, the European Commission will be able to respond within hours," emphasized Scholz.

Trump's threats

US President Donald Trump, even before officially returning to the White House, threatened tariffs on Canada, Mexico, the EU, and China. Trump has already imposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico, as well as partially on China.

The US president also confirmed his intention to impose tariffs on European goods and complained that the EU had treated the US "horribly."

Additionally, he threatened to introduce 100% tariffs on BRICS countries if they decide to create their own currency to replace the US dollar.
