In February 2025, Germany will hold early parliamentary elections. However, it is not Olaf Scholz who is to be nominated for the post of chancellor, Spiegel reports.

At a closed-door meeting, some Bundestag members from the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) for the first time stated that they should run for election not with Olaf Scholz, but with the more popular Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

The statements were made during a meeting of the influential Seeheimer Kreis group, which unites conservative members of the Bundestag from the SPD. In particular, Joe Weingarten, who represents Rhineland-Palatinate, said that Olaf Scholz's reputation among people in Germany is at the very bottom.

In his turn, MP Christian Schreiber from Ludwigshafen was quoted as saying that he was no longer able to convince party members to participate in the election campaign for Scholz. In particular, they are no longer ready for it.

Background

In early November, the ruling coalition in Germany collapsed. This happened after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who is a representative of the SPD party.

All ministers from the SPD were dismissed after him, and on November 8, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier handed the ministers their dismissal certificates.
