Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. At the same time, Berlin will not allow the war to spread, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says.

In his New Year's address, recorded for television, Scholz noted that many German citizens looked at Russia's brutal aggressive war against Ukraine with a sense of growing anxiety.

“I assure you that we will not abandon Ukraine and will continue to support Ukraine like no other country in Europe,” he said.

At the same time, the government will continue to keep cool so that the war does not spread, Scholz added.

At the same time, the leader of Scholz's SPD party, Lars Klingbeil, called on Europeans to be more decisive in their relations with Russia after the sabotage of a submarine cable in the Baltic Sea.

“Events show that it is a mistake to believe that Putin is waging war only against Ukraine. Hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure are also on the rise here and across Europe,” Klingbeil said, urging states bordering the Baltic Sea to improve protection and control and to be vigilant.

On February 23, Germany will hold early parliamentary elections, after which Scholz is likely to lose the post of German Chancellor.
