Ukraine should not face any obstacles on its way to the EU. US President Donald Trump's opinion that Ukraine is to blame for the war is not true, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says.

Asked whether he shares the view of US President Donald Trump, which coincides with Vladimir Putin's, that Ukraine is to blame for the war, Scholz said in an interview with ARD: “It is not. We in Europe insist on this.”

For this reason, he said, the EU is keeping its door open to Ukraine as a potential member, adding: “Ukraine must not be hindered in its decision to be a democratic, sovereign nation on its way into Europe.”

Scholz said that in the event of a future peaceful settlement, Ukraine must have a strong army, “for which we in Europe and our international and transatlantic partners share responsibility.”

Europe is trying to find an answer to Trump's policy on the war after high-level US-Russian talks sidelined Ukraine and its European supporters, raising fears that the US leader might make concessions to Moscow to end the war.

Trump first said that Ukraine was allegedly responsible for Russia's invasion in 2022. Then Trump condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him a “dictator.”
