Scholz expresses readiness to discuss peace in Ukraine with Putin
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that he is ready to have a talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their conversation will focus on peace in Ukraine, according to FAZ.
Scholz emphasized the need to support diplomatic talks with Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. According to him, Germany will continue to intensively support Ukraine in its defense campaign against Russia. However, he also wants to do everything possible to ensure that the war ends as soon as possible.
Scholz mentioned the numerous victims in Ukraine as well as that the countless Russian soldiers are becoming "victims of the imperialist madness of the Russian president." He believes that another peace conference involving Russia is necessary.
"There should be another conference in which Russia will also participate, but never over Ukraine's head and only in coordination with our closest partners," Scholz stated.
He also reaffirmed that Russia's attack on Ukraine remains the greatest threat to Europe.
"We support Ukraine, and we will continue to do so for as long as it takes," Scholz said.
Germany's aid to Ukraine
Germany is one of the leading countries in providing aid to Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have received multiple rocket launchers, artillery, anti-aircraft systems, state-of-the-art air defense systems, and other military equipment from Germany. However, Germany has refused to supply Taurus cruise missiles.
Media reports that Scholz plans to hold telephone negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Notably, the last phone call between Scholz and Putin took place in December 2022.
