German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has once again spoken out against the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine. He argues that it is necessary to avoid a conflict between NATO and Russia, reports n-tv.

At a conference of Brandenburg SPD delegates in Potsdam, Scholz emphasized that under his leadership Germany had become Ukraine's second largest military supporter. At the same time, he still believes that supplying long-range weapons would be a mistake.

“However, I am still convinced that it would be a mistake if the long-range weapons we would provide to Ukraine were used to strike in the Russian hinterland, or if we would supply weapons that could do just that,” Scholz said.

He emphasized that a conflict between NATO and Russia must be prevented at all costs.

“And if no one but us has the power of reason necessary to make informed decisions, then so be it,” he concluded.

Recently, German opposition leader and CDU/CSU candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz said that he would give Ukraine long-range Taurus cruise missiles. He added that this would happen only in one case - only after consultations with the United States.
