Switzerland’s national team has faced unexpected difficulties ahead of the start of the 2026 World Cup. Key striker Breel Embolo was unable to fly to the United States on time with his teammates due to an unexpected force majeure situation, according to SRF.

What happened to Embolo

The striker’s electronic travel authorization to enter the United States under the ESTA program was initially fully approved. However, less than three hours before the scheduled departure of the flight from Zurich, the U.S. side unexpectedly revoked the document for additional review.

It later emerged that the reason for the disruption was a ghost from the past. Adrian Arnold, Director of Corporate Communications at the Swiss Football Association, confirmed that the sudden blocking of the documents was linked to a court case involving an incident from 2018 involving Embolo, which was only recently concluded.

Rescue through diplomatic channels

As the team departed overseas without its leader, the Swiss were forced to urgently engage diplomatic channels. Embolo had to appear personally at the U.S. embassy and apply for a full visa.

The American side responded positively to the football association’s request and processed the player’s application on a priority basis. In the end, the situation was resolved successfully: the striker received the necessary documents and arrived in the United States, joining the national team camp.

How important the striker is to the team

The delay of the Rennes forward caused concern for the coaching staff, as he is one of the key players in the team’s tactical setup.

The 29-year-old striker has scored 24 goals in 86 appearances for the national team.

As a reminder, Switzerland will play in Group B of the World Cup group stage. Their opponents for a place in the knockout stage will be Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Canada.

Switzerland will play its first match on June 13 against Qatar.

What ESTA is

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an automated electronic system that determines the eligibility of citizens from certain countries (including Switzerland) to enter the United States without a visa for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days.

Although the system usually grants approval within minutes, U.S. border authorities reserve the right to revoke authorization at any time or send an application for additional manual review if new legal or court-related circumstances arise.

In such cases, travelers, as in Embolo’s situation, must go through the standard visa application process at an embassy.
