Ukraine and Russia conducted the second stage of a new large-scale prisoner exchange today, June 9. Exclusive footage has emerged showing the return of Ukrainian defenders, according to the Facebook page of the Security Service of Ukraine.

As noted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), today’s prisoner exchange was the result of the efforts of the Joint Center for the Coordination of the Search and Release of Prisoners of War, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, and other authorized bodies carrying out the directives of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The SBU also emphasized that Ukraine expects the full implementation of the humanitarian agreements reached during the meeting in Istanbul.

Prisoner exchange

On Tuesday, June 10, Ukraine and Russia conducted another prisoner exchange. Among those released were seriously wounded and injured soldiers from specific categories agreed upon during negotiations in Istanbul on June 2.

According to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel returned home, including representatives of the Navy, Ground Forces, Territorial Defense, Air Assault Forces, State Security Service, Border Guard Service, National Guard, and the State Special Transport Service.

Among today’s freed defenders are those who fought in the defense of Mariupol and had spent over three years in captivity. In addition to enlisted and non-commissioned personnel, several officers were also released.

All the liberated defenders are suffering from severe injuries and illnesses, including amputated limbs, vision problems, abscesses, infections, trauma, shrapnel wounds, and chronic diseases. Some have been diagnosed with hepatitis and tuberculosis.
