Excessive sweating is a common reaction of the body to heat, stress, or physical activity, but sometimes it becomes uncomfortable in everyday life. As it turns out, the intensity of sweating can be reduced with simple methods, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Use an antiperspirant
If your underarms sweat excessively, make sure you are using an antiperspirant rather than just a deodorant.
A deodorant helps mask odors. It usually contains ingredients such as baking soda, alcohol, and added fragrances.
An antiperspirant, on the other hand, stops sweating by blocking sweat glands. It typically contains aluminum salts.
Wear breathable clothing
The clothes you wear can significantly affect how much you sweat. Avoid synthetic fabrics such as nylon, acrylic, and spandex.
Instead, choose cotton or mesh fabrics. They allow better airflow and help keep you cool.
Pay attention to your diet
Certain foods can activate the body’s thermostat and trigger sweating.
A diet high in fat and low in fiber can increase digestive workload, which may raise internal body temperature.
Avoid foods that can trigger sweating, such as:
- Ultra-processed foods
- Spicy foods
- Sugary foods
- Salty foods
- Alcohol
- Caffeine
It is better to increase consumption of hydrating foods and those containing calcium, such as:
- Leafy greens
- Bananas
- Grapes
- Watermelon
- Dairy products
Drink enough water
Drinking enough water will not stop sweating. However, it can help reduce excessive sweating. This is because staying hydrated helps regulate internal body temperature.
Sweating causes the body to lose water, so it needs to be replenished.
Quit smoking
Nicotine affects the nervous system and activates the so-called sympathetic response of the body — a state similar to mild stress. In this mode, heart rate may increase, blood vessels may constrict, and sweat glands may become more active.
Nicotine levels in the body also fluctuate. After smoking a cigarette, they rise and then gradually fall. These ups and downs can sometimes trigger reactions such as sweating, trembling, or internal tension.
