NATO countries must prepare for war and increase defense spending. Otherwise, Russia "may try something just like in Ukraine," says NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, according to Welt.

"I am telling you very clearly: we must prepare for war. This is the best way to avoid war," he said.

NATO Secretary General noted that Europe must "not show weakness" towards Russia.

"Otherwise, Russia may try something. Just like in Ukraine," he stated.

However, from Rutte's perspective, the threat doesn't only come from Russia. The Chinese have also "greatly expanded" their military capabilities.

Germany's example

According to Rutte, Germany, in particular, must "spend more and produce more" and must "consistently continue" the path it has chosen both in Europe and in Ukraine.

He acknowledged that Germany has "done a lot right" since the start of Russia's war in Ukraine.

"But, given the size of the German economy, we naturally want them to do much more," emphasized the NATO head.

Rutte's statements on Ukraine

This is not the first time Rutte has spoken about the war in Ukraine and the threat hanging over Western countries in this context. Recently, he said that NATO countries must support Ukraine more, as this could change the course of the war.

Moreover, Rutte has stated that the future of global security depends on the outcome of Russia's war against Ukraine. He even suggested buying weapons for Ukraine from the United States with funds from the European Union.
