NATO’s response to any attempted invasion by the Russian Federation would be devastating, Secretary General Mark Rutte said during a press conference. At the same time, member states must increase defense spending to address growing security threats.

“If Putin attacks NATO, the reaction will be devastating - he will lose. Let him not even try to do it. We have a very powerful deterrent,” Rutte warned.

NATO must boost defense spending

Rutte emphasized that Russia’s rapid military expansion and defense industry buildup demand increased attention. He also highlighted China’s growing military power, including its expanding nuclear arsenal and naval fleet development. According to Rutte, if both nations continue down this path, their military expansion will far exceed the measures taken by the West.

Rutte emphasized the need to remain aware of the situation. He stated that NATO countries should increase defense spending, provide more support to Ukraine, and be prepared to defend themselves if necessary.

NATO defense spending increases

Notably, Donald Trump has repeatedly urged NATO allies to increase defense expenditures. He has even threatened to "encourage" Russia to do whatever it wants with NATO members who fail to meet their financial obligations.

In January, Trump called on NATO countries to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP.
