Russian forces shelled Vovchansk early on May 12, dropping airstrikes on the city. There are casualties reported, with fatalities and injuries, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

"Today, in the morning, the enemy continued to strike residential quarters of Vovchansk with guided airstrikes," the statement reads.

According to rescuers, one of the strikes hit a single-story residential building.

"A family of four was trapped under the rubble and required assistance," the State Emergency Service noted.

Rescuers freed two brothers from the debris of the collapsed structures: men born in 1979 and 1983, and transported them to a medical vehicle.

"The homeowner, a man born in 1956, managed to extricate himself from the rubble on his own before rescuers arrived. Unfortunately, his wife, a woman born in 1950, perished under the debris of the building," the department added.

Additionally, dozens of private and multi-story residential buildings have been destroyed or partially demolished as a result of the shelling.

Shelling of Vovchansk

Russian forces continue to shell Vovchansk, located in the Kharkiv region, just 10 km from the border with the Russian Federation.

The situation with the shelling of Vovchansk escalated sharply on May 10 when the occupiers attempted to breach the Ukrainian border from the Belgorod region. Fighting is ongoing there.

The invaders are targeting the city with artillery and UAVs. There are hardly any intact buildings left in the center of Vovchansk. Evacuation efforts are underway in Vovchansk, with 300-400 people remaining in the city.
