Situation in the Chernihiv region

The Russian troops occupied the northern part of the Chernihiv region in February-March 2022. The Ukrainian defenders liberated the region in April last year. After the de-occupation, it turned out that the Russians had mistreated the local population, with evidence of torture, murder, and the use of forceful detention of Ukrainians.

Currently, the Russian invaders are frequently shelling the border areas of Chernihiv region.

The largest attack on Chernihiv occurred on August 19. The Russian occupiers fired ballistic missiles at the city center. The attack damaged a drama theater, a square, court buildings, the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, shops, and other public facilities. Seven people were killed in the Russian strike and about 150 people were injured.
