Russian troops advance in Chasiv Yar - UK intelligence
Russian forces have made progress in the fiercely contested town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine. They have not been able to do so since July, the UK Ministry of Defense says.
Russian troops most likely crossed the canal in the southern part of Chasiv Yar and approached the city limits.
In the central part of the canal area, Russian troops most likely made limited advances west of the canal in the eastern part of Chasiv Yar.
However, according to UK intelligence, fierce fighting is still taking place in the central and northern parts of the canal area, and Russian troops have not been able to gain a foothold in these areas.
“From mid-July 2024 until recently, Russian Forces had been unable to cross the canal due to extensive defensive measures taken by the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the UK Ministry of Defense says.
Fighting for Chasiv Yar
In June, UK intelligence reported that Russian troops had achieved a limited breakthrough in the eastern suburb of Chasiv Yar.
At that time, the UK Ministry of Defense predicted that Russian troops would likely remain on the eastern side of the canal that runs through the city, which is an obstacle to their advance.
In October, Bild reported that Russian troops had managed to break through the defense of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region and gain a foothold. The Ukrainian military acknowledges that the situation in the city has become more complicated.
