About Gurtsiyev
Gurtsiyev was in charge of the aerial bombardment of Mariupol while Russia was capturing the city in February 2022. In October 2024, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin announced the appointment of Gurtsyiev as the first deputy mayor of Stavropol.
Capture of Mariupol
In February 2022, Russian troops started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With massive bombings that killed thousands of people, the Russians captured Mariupol, which was completely destroyed.
In May 2022, it was reported that the Russian troops killed 25,000 people in Mariupol. But the number of victims could be much higher.
Last June, The Guardian wrote that Russia used deliberate starvation tactics during the capture of Mariupol in February 2022. Lawyers say that the strategy of depriving the city's residents of food during the blockade can be equated to a war crime.
