Russian forces strike Sumy with a missile: Young woman killed

Russian forces launched a missile strike on Sumy this evening, May 6. A child was killed, and seven people were injured, according to the Sumy Regional Military Administration and the Sumy City Council.
According to the military administration, the Russian army carried out an attack on the outskirts of Sumy around 5:30 p.m. Kyiv time. Russia did not target any military objectives, as it specifically aimed at civilian structures.
"Preliminarily, the enemy struck civilian infrastructure with a ballistic missile. The consequences of the attack are being clarified," the military administration stated.
The administration also added that an air alert is currently ongoing in the city, so the danger remains.
"The threat of missile strikes persists. Stay in shelters!" the authorities emphasized.

Later, the Sumy City Council reported casualties and injuries as a result of the missile strike on civilian infrastructure.
"As of now, there are 7 known victims: 1 adult woman and 6 children. One of the children has died," the city council stated.
The regional administration noted that one of the injured children is in extremely critical condition.
The city council also added that all relevant emergency services are working at the site of the strike. The consequences of the Russian attack are still being clarified.

The City Council clarified information about the fatality during the attack. It turned out that the victim was a young woman, not a child.
"According to updated information, the person killed was not a child, but a 20-year-old woman," the council emphasized.
Previous missile strike on Sumy
On the morning of April 13, Russian forces carried out a double missile strike on the center of Sumy, using ballistic missiles with cluster munitions.
The attack targeted the city center and occurred on a major holiday, Palm Sunday. It took place at a time when the streets were crowded with people, resulting in heavy civilian casualties.
According to the latest data, at least 35 people were killed, including children, and the number of injured has reached 117, among them 15 children. It was also reported that the highest number of casualties occurred in a trolleybus passing by the site of the explosion.
Bombing of the Sumy region
In general, the enemy has recently intensified bombing of the Sumy region. The Bilopillia and Vorozhba communities are suffering the most, as the enemy uses guided aerial bombs, multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), and mortars to strike civilian infrastructure.
According to the latest data, the number of civilian casualties has risen to five, with at least eight others injured.
Local authorities are urging residents to evacuate. A hub is currently operating in Sumy to assist evacuees with housing, access to primary medical care, humanitarian aid, registration for internally displaced person (IDP) status, and applications for financial assistance.
