The situation in the Chernihiv region
The Russian army occupied the northern part of the Chernihiv region in February-March 2022. Ukrainian forces liberated the region in April of last year.
After the de-occupation, it was revealed that the Russians had treated the local population brutally, with documented cases of torture, killings, and severe mistreatment of Ukrainians.
Currently, Russian occupiers frequently shell the border territories of the Chernihiv region.
The most significant strike on Chernihiv occurred on August 19. Invaders launched ballistic missiles at the city center. The attack damaged the drama theater, the square, the courthouse, the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, shops, and other public establishments. Seven people lost their lives, and around 150 individuals were injured as a result of the Russian strike.
