In Bulgaria, the civic association BOEC has discovered a site linked to Russia’s private military company Wagner near the village of Kladnitsa in the Pernik region, Novinite reports.
BOEC head Georgi Georgiev said activists believe a building located in the mountains above Kladnitsa is being used as a base for "terrorist activity." According to him, the facility was heavily guarded by patrols with dogs.
People present at the site were reportedly wearing uniforms bearing the Wagner emblem. A Russian flag was also spotted on the building.
"People around the house are wearing clothing and headgear with the logo of the Russian paramilitary terrorist organization Wagner, which is controlled by Russian special services," Georgiev said.
Activists suspect those at the site may be current or former security service personnel. They believe this could explain why no action has been taken against them so far.
BOEC has filed a complaint with Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry, reporting the presence of armed individuals and the use of Russian private military company symbols on Bulgarian territory.
Previously, two former members of Russia’s GRU and Wagner PMC were found aboard a Russian shadow fleet tanker that Ukraine attacked in the Mediterranean Sea. They are believed to have been involved in espionage activities in European waters.
In addition, a boat of Russia’s border service was recently spotted sailing along Estonia’s Narva River flying a Wagner flag.
According to British intelligence, Wagner PMC units were formally integrated into Russia’s National Guard (Rosgvardia) in October 2023.
