Russian army casualties in the war against Ukraine dropped in July 2025 to their lowest level since April 2024, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.

Over a million casualties since the start of invasion

According to British intelligence, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, total Russian losses have reached 1.05 million (killed and wounded). Since the beginning of 2025 alone, losses have amounted to 260,000.

Daily casualty rate falling

In July, the average daily losses of Russian forces were around 1,072 personnel, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. Since March 2025, this rate has been steadily declining. July’s figure marks the lowest daily average in the past 15 months.

The UK intelligence report notes that this drop in losses occurred despite Russia maintaining a high intensity of attacks along the entire frontline. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to make slow gains in the Donbas.

According to US President Donald Trump, Russia has lost 112,500 troops since the beginning of the year, including 20,000 killed just in July. He added that since January 1, 2025, Ukraine has lost approximately 8,000 soldiers, not including those missing in action.

Earlier, British intelligence reported that Vladimir Putin and the Russian military leadership prioritize their war goals over the lives of Russian soldiers, aiming to avoid any negative impact on public or elite support for the war.
