Russian barriers near Crimean bridge damaged by storm in Black Sea
Part of the barriers near the Crimean bridge built by the Russian troops failed. The reason was a powerful storm in the Black Sea, says Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy.
“As a result of the storms this year, quite a few of them have failed and are not performing their functions. This information needs to be verified. But, according to the available information, we can conclude that nature always interferes,” he said.
According to the spokesperson, the Kerch Strait is quite dynamic, and the Russians tried to take this into account when building structures. Therefore, the Russians built parallel structures, defense systems, and so-called “fences” near the Crimean bridge.
“The storm season is not over yet, and this rather severe weather at sea will continue for at least 2-3 months,” Pletenchuk added.
He emphasized that such changes in the Russians' barrier system are “quite expected.”
Crimean bridge is a target for Ukraine
The Crimean bridge built by the Russians is one of the main logistical arteries of the Russian military to support their troops in southern Ukraine.
In October 2022, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted an unprecedented operation, attacking the Crimean Bridge. Since then, the Russians have been trying to secure the bridge, including building defenses and strengthening air defense.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that the bridge is a legitimate target for the defense. Similar statements were made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the head of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov, and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Maliuk.
