This afternoon, January 2, Russian forces struck Kharkiv, hitting residential buildings. Preliminary reports indicate two missiles were launched at the city.

Ukrainian President's reaction to strike

"A horrific Russian strike on Kharkiv. Preliminary reports indicate two missiles were launched directly at the residential area. One of the buildings has been severely damaged," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

A rescue operation is currently underway at the site, with all necessary emergency services involved.

Russian army launched ballistic missiles

Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration (OVA), said the strike hit a five-story residential building in the Kyivskyi district of the city.

"Central Kharkiv, two missile strikes, preliminary reports indicate ballistic missiles, with direct hits on a five-story residential building," Syniehubov said.

Initially, 13 people were reported injured. Six have been taken to the hospital, including one woman in serious condition.

The missile attack destroyed the residential building and caused a fire.

It also damaged windows and facades in nearby buildings. Emergency services, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS), and city and regional authorities are on site. The rescue operation is ongoing.

Number of injured grows

According to the OVA, the number of injured in Kharkiv has risen to 15. People may still be trapped under the rubble, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Updated reports now indicate 16 injured.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said that one person is in serious condition.
