Russian antivirus giant Kaspersky Lab to leave US market after ban
Russian anti-virus giant Kaspersky Lab has decided to leave the US market after President Joe Biden's administration banned the sale and distribution of the company's software, according to BBC.
The company said it had made the "sad and difficult decision" to leave "as business opportunities in the country are no longer viable".
Starting July 20, 2024, Kaspersky will gradually wind down its operations in the United States. The company's US website has already stopped selling antivirus and cybersecurity products, and the screen displays a message saying "purchase is unavailable for US customers".
"Kaspersky will generally no longer be able to, among other activities, sell its software within the United States or provide updates to software already in use," the Commerce Department said.
Kaspersky Lab banned in United States
Kaspersky, a Russian cybersecurity company founded in 1997, is known for its anti-virus software.
On July 16, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced a complete ban on the use of Kaspersky products in the country due to concerns about the company's ties to Russia.
In addition, the United States imposed sanctions on Kaspersky's management.
