On August 30, 13 people were injured in an air strike on Sumy. Smoke is observed in the city, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and Sumy Regional Air Administration.

"Two people were killed by Russia. According to doctors, 13 people were injured," the SESU says in a statement.

In addition, according to rescuers, a large-scale fire broke out as a result of the Russian attack, destroying buildings and premises.

"Rescuers are working at the scene. Special firefighting equipment has been deployed, in particular, for high-altitude work and water supply. The fire has been contained. The work is ongoing," the firefighters say.

Black smoke

The fire at the plant caused the premises to catch fire, and black smoke was visible in the sky over Sumy.

"According to preliminary results, a slight excess of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide concentrations was detected," says the Sumy Regional Air Quality Management, adding that specialists are also monitoring the air quality in the city.

Until the fire is completely extinguished and the results of the research are available, residents of Sumy are advised to

  • close windows and spend less time outdoors, especially for people prone to allergic reactions;
  • limit children's stay on the street as much as possible;
  • thoroughly treat items and food that were exposed to smoke in the open.

Initially, 9 people were injured in the Russian shelling of Sumy, but later the number of injured increased to 11. 2 people were also reported killed in the Russian attack on Sumy.
