Russia-Ukraine war: Situation on the front as of October 16

Ukrainian soldiers are advancing in the Melitopol direction and continuing assault operations further south of Bakhmut. They have also managed to repel over 15 attacks in the Maryinka area, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling
Over the past day, there have been approximately 70 combat clashes. Additionally, the Russian Federation launched another missile and aviation strike on Ukraine, using guided aviation missile Kh-59, ballistic missile Iskander-M, and strike UAVs Shahed-136/131. Information regarding the consequences of this terrorist attack is currently being clarified.
In total, the enemy carried out 10 missile and 87 aviation strikes, as well as 68 shelling attacks from multiple rocket launcher systems on the positions of our troops and civilian areas. Unfortunately, there have been casualties and injuries among the civilian population due to Russian terrorist attacks. Private residential houses and other civilian infrastructure have also suffered damage and destruction.
Aviation strikes affected the following settlements:
- Hremiach, Halahanivka, Chernihiv region;
- Pishchane, Druzhelubivka, Cherneshchyna, Kharkiv region;
- Nadiia, Bilohorivka, Serebrianske Forestry, Novolubivka, Luhansk region;
- Hryhorivka, Siversk, Spirne, Klischiivka, Oleksandro-Shultynne, Bila Hora, Dyliivka, Avdiivka, Ocheretyne, Stepove, Maryinka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Donetsk region;
- Burhunka, Odradokamianka, Mykolaivka, Olhivka, Stepanivka, Mykilske, Kherson, Kherson region;
- Ivanivka, Mykolaiv region.
More than 110 populated areas in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions came under artillery fire.
Frontline situation
The operational situation remains relatively unchanged in the Volyn and Polissia directions.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the transfer of our forces to critical directions, and increases the density of minefields and explosive obstacles along the state border in the Belgorod region.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled over 15 enemy attacks in the areas of Synkivka and Ivanivka in the Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy did not engage in offensive actions.
In the Bakhmut direction, our defenders repelled 5 enemy attacks in the areas of Klischiivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue assault operations south of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, inflicting losses on the enemy in personnel and equipment and consolidating their achieved positions.
In the Avdiivka direction, with the support of aviation, the enemy's unsuccessful assault actions were carried out in the areas of Avdiivka, Keramik, Stepove, Tonenke, and Severne in the Donetsk region. Our soldiers repelled over 15 enemy attacks here.
In the Maryinka direction, during the past day, the Defense Forces repelled over 15 enemy attacks in the area of Maryinka in the Donetsk region.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy attacks in the area north of Pryiutne in the Donetsk region.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy attempted to regain lost positions in the Robotyne area of the Zaporizhzhia region four times but was unsuccessful.
In the Kherson direction, the Defense Forces are conducting counter-battery warfare, successfully striking the enemy's depots and rear areas.
UAF offensive
The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol direction, inflicting losses on the occupying forces in personnel and equipment, and wearing down the enemy along the entire frontline.
Enemy losses
During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces delivered 15 strikes on the concentrations of personnel, weaponry, and military equipment, and another strike on the enemy's air defense system. Ukrainian defenders also destroyed a Russian Mi-8 helicopter.
Rocket forces units hit two areas with the concentration of personnel, weaponry, military equipment, two air defense systems, and five artillery pieces of the enemy.
The total number of losses for the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion is 287,770 military personnel.
