Russia-Ukraine war: Situation on the front as of August 21

The Ukrainian defense forces continue their offensive operation in the direction of Melitopol and Berdyansk. They are consolidating their positions at achieved front lines and conducting counter-battery measures, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Russian shelling
During the past day, the enemy carried out 29 aviation strikes and 43 artillery shelling attacks on the positions of our troops and populated areas.
As a result of Russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings, educational institutions, and other civilian infrastructure have been damaged.
The possibility of missile and aviation strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.
Situation on the fronts
During the past day, more than 25 military clashes have occurred.
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains relatively stable.
In the Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy carried out aviation strikes in the areas southwest of Iskryskivshchyna and Zhuravka in the Sumy region.
The enemy conducted mortar and artillery shelling attacks on more than 30 populated areas, including:
- Karpovychi and Bohdanove in the Chernihiv region;
- Tovstodubove, Volfyne, Pokrovka, and Novooleksandrivka in the Sumy region;
- Varvarivka, Budarky, Zemlianky, and Komisarove in the Kharkiv region.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy conducted an aviation strike west of Mykolaivka and carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Synkivka in the Kharkiv region. Populated areas including Topoli, Masiutivka, Kupiansk, Kyslivka, and Berestove in the Kharkiv region were subjected to enemy artillery and mortar fire.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Shyikivka, Terniv, Pyskunivka, and Vesele in the Donetsk region. Approximately 15 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Torske, Verkhniokamyanske, Spirne, in the Donetsk region, were subjected to enemy artillery fire.
In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the Kurdiumivka area of the Donetsk region. Aviation strikes were carried out in the areas of Vesele, Klischiivka, and Kurdiumivka in the Donetsk region. Over 20 populated areas, including Predtechyne, Dyliivka, Kurdiumivka, Ozarianivka, and Druzhba in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery fire.
In the Avdiivka direction, populated areas Keramik, Stepove, Orlivka, Avdiivka, Nevelske, and Karlivka in the Donetsk region were shelled by artillery.
In the Mariupol direction, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the Russian troops' advance in the Marinka area of the Donetsk region. The enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Krasnogorivka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. Populated areas Krasnogorivka, Marinka, Pobeda, Oleksandrivka, Paraskoviivka, and Yelizavetivka in the Donetsk region were subjected to artillery fire.
In the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Vuhledar and Staryi Maier in the Donetsk region. Populated areas Vodiane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Niva, Blahodatne, and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region were shelled by artillery.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Charivne, Robotyne, and Pavlivka in the Zaporizhzhia region. Over 30 populated areas, including Novodarivka, Chervona Krynytsia, Mala Tokmachka, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepove, and Piatykhatky in the Zaporizhzhia region, were affected by enemy artillery fire.
In the Kherson direction, the enemy conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Olhivka and Sadove in the Kherson region. Over 20 populated areas, including Zolota Balka, Kozatske, Tokarivka, Poniativka, Kherson, Veletenske, and Kizomys of the Kherson region, suffered from enemy artillery fire.
Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol and Berdyansk directions, consolidating their positions at achieved front lines and conducting counter-battery measures.
Enemy losses
Ukraine's defense aviation conducted 9 strikes on the enemy's personnel concentration areas during the past day.
The missile and artillery units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces targeted 1 command post and 3 artillery weapons at enemy firing positions during the past day.
