Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 8

As of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on Thursday, January 8, there had been 142 combat engagements along the front line. The heaviest fighting was recorded in the Pokrovsk direction, where Russian forces carried out 27 assaults, according to a report by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Telegram.
Over the past day, Russian forces launched one missile strike and 15 airstrikes, using two missiles and dropping 58 guided aerial bombs. Russia also deployed 2,982 kamikaze drones and carried out 3,055 attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders and populated areas.
Frontline situation
In the Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Russian forces carried out three assaults. The enemy also shelled the positions of the Defense Forces and populated areas 90 times, including two attacks using multiple launch rocket systems.
In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, Russian forces carried out six assaults in the areas of the settlements of Buhruvatka, Vilcha, and Fyholivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, the Russian army attacked four times toward Kupiansk, Petropavlivka, and Nova Kruhliakivka; one combat engagement is still ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces launched eight attacks toward the settlements of Drobysheve, Lyman, Stavy, and in the area of Novoselivka. Two engagements are still continuing.
In the Sloviansk direction, four assaults by the occupiers were recorded near Siversk, Dronivka, and Fedorivka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, no offensive actions by the enemy were recorded.
In the Kostiantynivka direction, the Russian units carried out 16 assaults in the areas of the settlements of Kostiantynivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Rusyn Yar, Sofiivka, and toward Stepanivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russia attacked 27 times in the areas of the settlements of Nykanorivka, Chervonyi Lyman, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Filiia, and Dachne. Fighting is still ongoing in some locations.
Since the start of the day in this direction, 81 enemy soldiers have been neutralized, 55 of them irreversibly. Ukrainian forces also destroyed four vehicles, one quad bike, 14 UAVs, and four units of specialized equipment, and hit eight enemy personnel shelters.
In the Oleksandrivka direction, the enemy attacked 13 times in the areas of the settlements of Verbove, Vyshneve, Zlahoda, Rybne, Yehorivka, Sichneve, and toward the settlements of Ivanivka and Oleksandrohrad. Four combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, 16 combat engagements took place in the areas of the settlements of Solodke, Huliaipole, and near Varvarivka. Two battles are still continuing. Enemy airstrikes targeted Yuliivka, Rizdvianka, Hirske, Verkhnia Tersa, Liubytske, and Zaliznychne.
In the Orikhiv direction, one combat engagement is currently ongoing near Mali Shcherbaky.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, the enemy carried out three assaults in the area of the Antonivskyi Bridge.
Russia’s losses in the war
According to the General Staff, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has lost an estimated 1,215,900 military personnel. Over the past day alone, Russian losses amounted to 1,400 troops.
