Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 5

As of 4:00 PM Kyiv time on Monday, January 5, there have been 80 combat engagements on the front. The hottest area remains the Pokrovsk direction, where 27 enemy attacks have been recorded since the start of the day, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Russian forces shelled border settlements with artillery, including Ryzhivka, Budky, Bezsalivka, and Stara Huta in the Sumy region, as well as Khrinivka in the Chernihiv region.
Situation on the fronts
In the Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, Russia carried out 31 shellings, including two with MLRS.
In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, one Russian attack was recorded near Vovchansk.
In the Kupiansk direction, the Russian troops twice attempted assaults toward Kurylivka and Kupiansk.
In the Lyman direction, the Russian forces attacked eight times near Nadiia, Zarichne, and in the areas of Drobysheve, Stavky, and Lyman. One battle is still ongoing.
In the Sloviansk direction, the Defense Forces repelled two Russian attacks near Zakitne. One engagement is still ongoing.
In the Kramatorsk direction, no enemy offensive actions were recorded.
In the Kostiantynivka direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 12 enemy assaults in the areas of Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Shcherbynivka, Rusyn Yar, and toward Kostiantynivka, Berestka, and Sofiivka. One combat engagement is still ongoing.
In the Pokrovsk direction, the Russian army carried out 27 assaults in the areas of Chervonyi Lyman, Sukhetske, Zatyshok, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske, Filiia, and toward Hryshyne and Ivanivka. So far, 20 enemy attacks have been repelled.
In the Oleksandrivka direction, the enemy attacked five times in the areas of Vyshneve and Zlahoda.
In the Huliaipole direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 16 enemy attacks near Uspenivka, Huliaipole, and toward Dobropillia, Varvarivka, Zelene, and Pryluky. Zaliznychne and Rizdvianka were hit by airstrikes using guided bombs. Five combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Orikhiv direction, no Russian offensive actions were recorded during the day.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, the Russian troops carried out an attack near the Antonivskyi Bridge.
Russian army losses
As of January 5, Russian forces’ losses over the past day amounted to 990 personnel, up to 200 pieces of equipment, and more than 700 drones. The total estimated combat losses of the enemy since February 24, 2022, have exceeded 1.212 million personnel.
