Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of December 31

Since the start of the day, Russian forces have carried out 58 combat engagements across various sections of the front. Ukrainian defenders are holding back enemy attacks while protecting key settlements, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
As of 4:00 p.m. on December 31, 2025, Russian forces continue offensive operations along the entire front line, attempting to break through Ukrainian defenses.
Chernihiv and Sumy regions: artillery shelling was recorded in Huta-Studenetska, Bleshnia, Ulanove, Ryzhivka, Volfyne, Rohizne, Bobylivka, Budky, Nova Huta, Kucherivka, Bachivsk, Prohres, and Utskovе.
Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions: 28 shelling incidents.
Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction: five attacks near Vovchansk and toward Obukhivka and Dovhenke.
Kupiansk direction: Ukrainian defenders repelled two attacks near Novoplatonivka and Bohuslavka.
Lyman direction: the enemy attacked five times near Novoselivka and Stavky. One advance attempt was stopped, while fighting continues at four locations.
Sloviansk direction: one attack in the area of Serebrianka.
Kramatorsk direction: no offensive actions recorded.
Kostiantynivka direction: 10 attacks in the areas of Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Shcherbynivka, Torske, Rusyn Yar, and toward Sofiivka and Ivanopillia. One combat engagement is ongoing.
Pokrovsk direction: 18 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders near Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Udachne, Molodetske, Filiia, and toward Nove Shakhove and Rodynske. Two combat engagements are ongoing.
Oleksandrivka direction: six attacks near Zlahoda, Rybne, and toward Andriivka-Klevtsove and Pryvillia. Two combat engagements are ongoing.
Huliaipole direction: Ukrainian troops stopped three attacks in Huliaipole, Solodke, and Bilohiria. Eight more combat engagements are ongoing. An airstrike hit Verkhniа Tersa.
Orikhiv direction: no combat engagements recorded.
Prydniprovskyi direction: the enemy did not conduct offensive actions but carried out guided aerial bomb strikes on Mykhailivka.
No significant changes in the situation were recorded in other directions of the front. Ukrainian defense forces continue to effectively contain the enemy and maintain control over most areas.
Since the start of the war, Russian forces have regularly carried out massive shelling and assaults on Ukrainian positions.
Previous days were also marked by significant enemy activity on the southeastern front, but Ukrainian defenders have successfully held key lines, preventing a breakthrough.
Additionally, due to newly received intelligence data, the General Staff updated the overall statistics of Russian army losses. From February 24, 2022, to December 31, 2025, the enemy’s estimated losses amount to about 1,207,910 military personnel.
