Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of August 9

As of 22:00 Kyiv time on August 9, there were 118 combat engagements on the front over the day, 30 of them in the Pokrovsk direction alone, according to a report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Enemy attacks
Since the start of the day, Russian forces have carried out two missile strikes with six missiles and 56 airstrikes, using 91 guided aerial bombs. In addition, the Russians deployed 1,670 kamikaze drones and conducted 3,069 attacks on Ukrainian military positions and populated areas.
Frontline situation
In the Northern-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, six combat engagements have taken place since the beginning of the day. The enemy carried out six airstrikes, dropping a total of 11 guided aerial bombs, and conducted 195 artillery attacks, including nine using multiple launch rocket systems.
In the Southern-Slobozhanskyi direction, Ukrainian forces repelled three enemy attacks during the day in the area of Vovchansk and toward the settlements of Kolodiazne and Petro-Ivanivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled four assaults near Petropavlivka and in the direction of Kovalivka.
In the Lyman direction, over the day, Russian forces attacked Ukrainian positions 12 times near the settlement of Karpivka and toward the settlements of Hryhorivka, Serebrianka, and Shandryholove. Six combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Siversk direction, since the beginning of the day, the enemy has carried out six offensive actions in the areas of Serebrianka and Pereizne.
In the Kramatorsk direction, our defenders repelled one enemy attack in the area of Bila Hora.
In the Toretsk direction, the Russian forces attacked Defense Forces positions six times. The main thrust of the Russian offensive was concentrated in the areas of Diliivka, Shcherbynivka, Toretsk, Rusyn Yar, and toward Pleshchiivka.
Since the start of the day in the Pokrovsk direction, Russian units have attempted 30 times to break through our defenses in the areas of Poltavka, Novoekonomichne, Myroliubivka, Zvirove, Udachne, Dachne, and toward the settlements of Novoukrainka, Pokrovsk, Sukhetske, and Zatyshok. Four combat engagements are still ongoing.
“Today in this direction, according to preliminary estimates, Ukrainian soldiers neutralized 153 Russian military, 99 of them irreversibly. Thirteen enemy vehicles, four guns, 102 unmanned aerial vehicles, three satellite terminals, and one enemy radar station were destroyed,” the report states.
In the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy attacked 17 times near the settlements of Vilne Pole, Maliivka, and Temyrivka, and toward the settlements of Olhivske, Iskra, Oleksandrohrad, Zelenyi Hai, Filiia, Komyshuvakha, and Tolstoi. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.
In the Huliaipole direction, the Defense Forces repelled an enemy attack near Malynivka, while the settlement of Kostiantynivka came under an airstrike.
In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy, supported by aviation, carried out three assaults in the areas of Novodanilivka and Novoandriivka. One combat engagement is still ongoing.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, the enemy made four attempts to advance but failed. The settlement of L’vove was hit by airstrikes with guided bombs.
In other directions, the situation has not changed significantly.
Russian army losses
From August 8 to 9, the Russian forces lost 940 soldiers in battles against Ukraine. In addition, the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed 41 artillery systems, 147 drones, and 125 vehicles.
Russia’s losses since the start of the full-scale invasion have already exceeded 1 million personnel.
