Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 24

Since the beginning of May 23, 150 combat engagements have taken place on the frontline. As of the evening, the highest number of Russia's attacks and assaults have been recorded in two directions, Pokrovsk and Kupiansk, with increased Russian activity noted in the latter, according to the data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russian strikes
Russian forces launched one missile strike and 50 airstrikes (using two missiles and dropping 80 guided bombs). They also deployed 1,291 kamikaze drones and carried out 4,204 shelling attacks on positions of Ukraine’s Defense Forces and populated areas.
Frontline update
In the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces launched three assaults near Vovchansk, Kamianka, and Dvorichna.
In the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces attacked five times near Kolisnykivka, Kruhliakivka, and Zahryzove; fighting is still ongoing in two locations.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces launched 16 assaults near Nove, Novomykhailivka, Zelena Dolyna, Torske, Hrekivka, Yampolivka, and toward Hryhorivka and Bilohorivka. Five engagements are ongoing.
In the Kramatorsk direction, Ukrainian forces repelled two out of three attacks; one battle is still underway. Russian forces advanced near Kurdiumivka and toward Bila Hora.
In the Toretsk direction, Russian forces attacked 20 times, focusing efforts near Romanivka, Ozarianivka, Krymske, Druzhba, and Toretsk. Ukrainian forces repelled 18 assaults; fighting continues.
In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses 45 times near Shevchenko Pershe, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Malynivka, Lysivka, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, Troitske, Kotliarivka, and Andriivka. Six engagements are currently underway.
"Defense forces are holding back the assaults. Russian forces are suffering significant losses - 403 were neutralized today in this direction, including 237 irrecoverable," the General Staff reported.
They also reported the destruction of 7 armored fighting vehicles, 14 vehicles, 40 motorcycles, 1 2S1 self-propelled artillery unit, 1 cannon, 1 mortar, 13 UAVs, 1 generator, 2 command posts, and 1 UAV antenna.
Additionally, the following were damaged: 1 tank, 1 armored vehicle, 4 vehicles, 8 motorcycles, 2 cannons, and 1 mortar.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian defenders halted 18 assault actions near Novopil, Zelene Pole, Vilne Pole, Bahatyr, Vesele, Burlatske, and toward Odradne. Nine battles are ongoing.
In the Orikhiv direction, Russian forces attempted five advances near Stepove and toward Novodanylivka, but were repelled, according to the General Staff.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, two unsuccessful assaults were carried out against fortified Ukrainian positions.
In the Kursk direction, Russian forces conducted 39 assault actions on Ukrainian positions; four engagements are ongoing.
"Russian forces carried out six airstrikes, dropping ten guided bombs, and conducted 239 artillery strikes, including 12 from multiple launch rocket systems," the military command added.
The situation in other directions remained largely unchanged, the General Staff noted.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Air Force reported a successful strike on a forward command post of Russia’s 3rd Army Corps in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, on May 21.
On May 23, the General Staff of Ukraine also published an updated map of combat activity across different directions.
