Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 23

Over the last day, May 22, 141 combat engagements took place on the frontline. Russia exerted the greatest pressure on the Pokrovsk and Kursk directions, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
“Over the past day, the aviation, missile forces and artillery of the Defense Forces struck 14 areas of concentration of personnel, weapons, and military equipment, 11 artillery pieces, four control points, and one ammunition storage facility of the enemy,” the General Staff writes.
Frontline updates
In the Kharkiv sector, the enemy tried to break through the defense lines of the Defense Forces eight times in the areas of Vovchansk, Mala Shapkivka, and Dovhenke.
In the Kupiansk sector, six attacks took place in the areas of Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka, Kindrashivka, Nova Kruhliakivka and towards Pishchane.
In the Lyman sector, the enemy attacked 12 times in the areas of Hrekivka, Novyi Myr, Torske, Lypove, and Ridkodub.
In the Siversk sector, the enemy made three attempts to advance in the areas of Hryhorivka, Vyimka, and Bilohorivka.
In the Kramatorsk sector, they attacked four times near Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora.
In the Toretsk sector, the enemy carried out nine attacks near Romanivka, Toretsk, Dachne, and Dyliiivka.
In the Pokrovsk sector, the Defense Forces stopped 44 assault actions in the areas of Nova Poltavka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Malynivka, and other localities.

In the Novopavlivka sector, the enemy carried out 14 attacks near Kostiantynopil, Vilne Pole, and in the direction of Shevchenko and Novopil over the past day.
In the Huliaipillia sector, the Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully stopped one attempt to advance near Vysoke.
In the Orikhiv sector, Russian forces twice advanced on the positions of the Defense Forces in the direction of Novodanylivka.

In the Kursk sector, the Defense Forces stopped 21 enemy assault operations.
Russia's losses in the war
Since the beginning of the war, the enemy has lost more than 978,000 soldiers. Over the past day alone, Russian losses amounted to 1,050 people. The Defense Forces also hit two tanks, one armored combat vehicle, 43 artillery systems, and more.
