Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 21

As of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on May 21, a total of 104 combat engagements took place on the front lines over the day. The highest number of clashes was recorded in the Pokrovsk direction, though other areas also saw significant activity, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Enemy shelling
Today, the enemy carried out 62 airstrikes, dropping 96 guided aerial bombs (KABs). They also used 1,218 kamikaze drones for attacks and conducted over 3,800 shellings of populated areas and our military positions.
Frontline situation
In the Kharkiv direction, Ukrainian units repelled six enemy attacks in the areas of Vovchansk, Kamyanka, and toward Mala Shapkivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, our soldiers repelled three enemy attacks near Kindrashivka, Zahryzove, and Nova Kruhliakivka, with one more battle still ongoing.
Ukrainian troops halted fourteen enemy assault actions near the settlements of Ridkodub, Hrekivka, and Zelena Dolyna, in the direction of Novoserhiivka, Olhivka, Novyi Myr, and in the Serebrianske Forestry in the Lyman direction. Two more clashes are still underway.
In the Siversk direction, the enemy carried out two offensive actions near Bilohorivka but failed to achieve any success.
In the Kramatorsk direction, our defenders repelled three enemy attempts to advance in the area of Chasiv Yar and toward Predtechyne.
In the Toretsk direction, the Russian army launched 12 assaults today on the positions of our defenders near Diliivka, Druzhba, and Toretsk. The Defense Forces are steadfastly holding back the pressure and have repelled nine enemy attacks, with three clashes still ongoing.
The enemy is attacking Ukrainian defenders intensely in the Pokrovsk direction. Throughout the day, the enemy carried out 43 offensive actions. Russian activity was recorded near the settlements of Yablunivka, Zoria, Shevchenko Pershe, Nova Poltavka, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Dachenske, Kotlyne, Novoserhiivka, Udachne, Troitske, Kotliarivka, Andriivka, and in the directions of Popovyi Yar and Novomykolaivka.
"According to preliminary estimates, our troops eliminated 67 Russian soldiers and wounded 68 in this direction today. They destroyed an armored combat vehicle, two cars, two motorcycles, 19 UAVs, one artillery piece, and one communication antenna," the report states.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian units repelled 15 attacks near the settlements of Bahatyr, Odradne, Shevchenko, Rivnopil, Novopil, Zelene Pole, and Vilne Pole. One clash is still ongoing. The enemy also carried out an airstrike in the area of Novodarivka.
The Russian army attempted three times to advance toward Ukrainian positions near Chervone in the Huliaipole direction. Huliaipole and Vysoke were hit by airstrikes using unguided aerial rockets.
In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy launched three assaults on our defenders’ positions near Shcherbaky and Stepove. Enemy aircraft carried out an airstrike using unguided rockets (NARs) on Novoandriivka.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, enemy units attempted to advance once but were unsuccessful.
In the Kursk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks, with one battle still ongoing. The enemy conducted 10 airstrikes, using 20 guided aerial bombs (KABs), and carried out 157 artillery shellings targeting populated areas and Defense Forces’ positions, including six strikes from multiple launch rocket systems.
Russian army losses
Over the past day, from May 20 to May 21, the Russian army lost another 980 soldiers on the front lines. Ukrainian forces also destroyed 23 artillery systems, 71 drones, and 76 vehicles.
