The Ukrainian Defense Forces eliminated another 980 Russian soldiers in the past day. The defenders also destroyed 23 artillery systems, 1 tank, and 2 troop-carrying AFVs, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The total combat Russian losses from February 24, 2022, to May 21, 2025, are estimated to be:

  • military personnel - about 976,780 (+980) Russian troops were eliminated;
  • tanks - 10,835 (+1);
  • troop-carrying AFVs - 22,569 (+2);
  • artillery systems - 28,090 (+23);
  • MLRS - 1,388;
  • anti-aircraft systems - 1,167;
  • aircraft - 372;
  • helicopters - 335;
  • UAV operational-tactical level - 36,692 (+71);
  • cruise missiles - 3,197;
  • warships/boats - 28;
  • submarines - 1;
  • vehicles and fuel tanks - 49,169 (+76);
  • special equipment - 3,895 (+1).

The Ukrainian General Staff’s evening report on May 20 stated that there were 129 combat engagements on the front since the start of the day.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces also noted that the Russian forces are still launching the heaviest attacks along the Pokrovsk direction.

Additionally, the May 21 report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) indicated that Russian forces have made advances in four regions: in northern parts of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, along the Zaporizhzhia region, and near Chasiv Yar and Toretsk in the Donetsk region.
