Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 17

As of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on May 17, a total of 131 combat engagements had taken place on the front since the beginning of the day. The highest number of clashes was recorded in the Pokrovsk direction, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Enemy shelling
Yesterday, Russian forces carried out 52 airstrikes, dropping 63 guided bombs. In addition, they deployed 1,036 kamikaze drones and launched nearly 4,000 attacks on positions of Ukrainian forces and civilian settlements.
Frontline situation
During the day, the enemy launched three attacks in the Kharkiv direction, near Vovchansk and toward Stroivka.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy made one attempted assault near Zahryzove.
In the Lyman direction, the Defense Forces repelled 19 attacks on positions near the settlements of Novoiehorivka, Lozova, Ridkodub, Hrekivka, Katerynivka, Yampolivka, and Zelena Dolyna. Three clashes are still ongoing.
In the Siversk direction, the enemy attacked ten times near Bilohorivka and Verkhniokamianske, with two clashes still unresolved.
Since the start of the day, in the Kramatorsk direction, the enemy attacked in the areas of Chasiv Yar, Kurdiumivka, and toward Predtechyne, Stupochky, and Bila Hora. Ukrainian units repelled six attacks, with two clashes currently ongoing. Kostiantynivka was damaged by Russian guided bomb strikes.
In the Toretsk direction today, there were 14 clashes. The enemy attempted to storm Ukrainian positions in the areas of Toretsk, Ozaryanivka, Dylivka, and Druzhba.
In the Pokrovsk direction, since the start of the day, the enemy launched 44 attacks near the settlements of Stara Mykolaivka, Yablunivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Nova Poltavka, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Novosergiivka, Troitske, and Andriivka. Our defenders repelled 38 assaults, with six clashes still ongoing.
“Today in this direction, preliminary data shows that 372 Russian soldiers were neutralized, of whom 228 were irreversibly lost. Additionally, Ukrainian soldiers destroyed a self-propelled artillery system, seven vehicles, 27 motorcycles, a mortar, and 15 drones; they also damaged another self-propelled artillery unit,” the report said.
In the Novopavlivka direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 19 enemy attacks near Kostyantinopol, Bahatyr, Vilne Pole, Rivnopil, Novopil, and Zelene Pole.
On the Orikhiv direction, our defenders repelled five enemy attacks near Shcherbaky, Stepove, and Mali Shcherbaky, with one clash still ongoing.
Two attempts by the Russian army to push Ukrainian units from their positions in the Prydniprovskyi direction ended in losses for the enemy.
In the Kursk direction, there were 14 clashes with Russian forces, three of which are ongoing. The enemy carried out 12 airstrikes, dropped 16 guided bombs, and conducted 211 artillery shellings, including three rocket launcher strikes.
No active offensive actions by the enemy were recorded in the Huliaipole direction.
Over the past day, on May 16, there were 145 combat engagements recorded along the entire front line. The enemy carried out the highest number of attacks in the Donetsk and Kharkiv directions.
