Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of May 17

Over the past day, 145 combat engagements were recorded along the entire front line. Ukrainian forces continue to inflict significant losses on the occupying troops in both personnel and equipment, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the General Staff, yesterday Russians launched one missile strike and 63 airstrikes across Ukrainian territory, using one missile and dropping 112 guided aerial bombs. In addition, they deployed 2,596 kamikaze drones and carried out 5,653 attacks on Ukrainian positions and settlements, including 135 attacks with multiple launch rocket systems.
The aggressor also carried out airstrikes on the following areas:
- Dmytrivka, Studenok, Myropilske, Chuikivka, Oleksandrivka in Sumy region;
- Tymofiivka, Khatnie, Kreidianka in Kharkiv region;
- Pokrovsk, Oleksandro-Kalynove, Shevchenko Pershe, Stara Mykolaivka, Sukhyi Yar, Novoukrainka, Dachne in Donetsk region;
- Malynivka, Vysoke, Hulyaipole, Novodarivka, Lukianivske in Zaporizhzhia region.
Situation on the front lines
In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy launched five assaults on Ukrainian positions near Vovchansk, Stroivka, and Kamianka.
In the Kupiansk direction, four attacks by the occupiers took place over the past day. The defense forces repelled enemy assault actions toward Kolisnykivka, Novoosynove, and near Zahryzove.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy attacked 17 times, attempting to advance near the settlements of Hrekivka, Torske, Yampolivka, Kolodiazi, and toward Shyikivka, Olhivka, Novyi Myr, Ridkodub, and Zelena Dolyna.
In the Siversk direction, in the areas of Verkhniokamianske and Bilohorivka, the enemy attacked the positions of our troops four times.
In the Kramatorsk direction, two combat engagements were recorded near Chasiv Yar and Kurdiumivka.
In the Toretsk direction, the enemy carried out 19 attacks in the areas of Toretsk, Krymske, and toward Dyliivka, Katerynivka, Pleshchiivka, and Novospaske.
In the Pokrovsk direction, our defenders repelled 52 enemy assault and offensive actions in the areas of the settlements Novoserhiivka, Malynivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Udachne, Novooleksandrivka, Zaporizke, Troitske, Bohdanivka, Andriivka, and toward the settlements of Novoukrainka, Oleksiivka, Poltavka, Yablunivka, Stara Mykolaivka, and Nova Poltavka.
In the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy attacked our positions 18 times in the areas of Kostiantynopil, Shevchenko, Novosilky, and toward Bahatyr and Zelene Pole.
In the Hulyaipole and Prydniprovskyi directions, no combat engagements were recorded over the past day.
In the Orikhiv direction, our defenders repelled two enemy assaults near Shcherbaky and Mali Shcherbaky.
In the Kursk direction, 13 combat engagements occurred over the past day. The enemy carried out 20 airstrikes, dropped 37 guided bombs, and conducted 195 artillery shellings, including 11 using multiple launch rocket systems.
In the Volyn and Polissia directions, no signs of enemy offensive group formation were detected.
Russian losses
Over the past day, the aviation, missile forces, and artillery of the defense forces struck seven areas of concentration of personnel, weapons, and military equipment, as well as one enemy air defense system.
In total, Russian forces lost 910 personnel over the past day. Ukrainian troops also destroyed six tanks, seven armored combat vehicles, 34 artillery systems, one multiple launch rocket system, 155 operational-tactical UAVs, and 96 units of enemy automotive equipment.
