Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 16
Since the beginning of January 16, 131 combat encounters have taken place by the evening. The greatest number of battles occurred in the Pokrovsk direction, where the enemy lost around 300 soldiers in a single day, and in the Kursk region, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The military command updated the operational situation across various directions as of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on January 16.
Russian shelling
Russian forces launched 1 missile strike and 30 airstrikes during their attacks, using 1 missile and dropping 47 guided aerial bombs.
Additionally, the enemy deployed 882 kamikaze drones and carried out more than 4,300 shelling attacks on the positions of Ukraine's Defense Forces and populated areas.
Frontline situation
In the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces did not carry out active actions.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attacked near Petropavlivka, Holubivka, Dvorichna, Zahrizove, and Pishchane. Five battles have been concluded, and one enemy attack is ongoing.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy stormed the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Kopanky, Novoserhiivka, Hrekyivka, Zeleni Hay, Makiyivka, Torske, Novoplatonivka, Terny, and Zarichne. Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 enemy attacks, and two battles are still ongoing.
In the Siversk direction, the Russian army launched five assaults on the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Verkhniokamianske and Bilohorivka. One battle is currently ongoing near Ivano-Darivka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, the Russian army launched seven attacks in the areas of Pryvillia, Bila Hora, Hryhorivka, and Chasiv Yar. Ukrainian defenders stopped all attempts by the Russian army to advance.
In the Toretsk direction, the enemy carried out 12 assault actions, attacking near Krymske, Leonidivka, Toretsk, and Shcherbynivka.
In the Pokrovsk direction, the enemy attacked 47 times in the areas of Zeleny Pole, Yelyzavetivka, Myrolyubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Novyi Trud, Pokrovsk, Shevchenko, Zviriv, Kotlyne, Uspenivka, Udachne, Slovianska, Petropavlivka, Andriivka, Ulakly, Kurakhove, Dachne, and Yantarne.
Nine battles are still ongoing in this direction.
"According to current data, the enemy's losses in this direction today amounted to 300 servicemen killed and wounded, four vehicles were destroyed, and a Russian tank, mortar, and one vehicle were significantly damaged," the General Staff reported.
In the Novopavlivske direction, the Russian army launched 10 attacks near Kostiantynopil, Velyka Novosilka, and Vremivka. Five of the enemy's assaults were repelled, and the battles continued.
The General Staff added that the enemy carried out airstrikes with guided bombs on the areas of Novopil and Kostiantynopil.
In the Huliaipole direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks near Novosilka and Temyrivka, and the Russian forces were unsuccessful.
In the Orikhiv direction, the Russian army unsuccessfully attacked the settlement of Novodanylivka.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, the Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled four enemy assaults.
In the Kursk direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces stopped 13 enemy attacks, with six battles still ongoing.
The General Staff added that no significant changes occurred on other parts of the front.
The day before, in the evening report, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces informed that since the beginning of January 15, 118 combat encounters have taken place on the front. The military command also noted that the enemy's heaviest attacks were in the Kursk region and three directions in the Donetsk region.
According to the General Staff, as of the morning of January 16, Russia had lost over 814,000 soldiers since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine. Specifically, the day before, Ukrainian forces eliminated 1,480 soldiers and destroyed 11 tanks, 20 armored combat vehicles, 40 artillery systems, 120 drones, and other enemy equipment.
