Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of January 5
As of 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time on January 5, there have been 177 combat clashes on the frontlines. More than half of them occurred in the Pokrovsk and Kursk directions, according to the evening report from the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff.
Russian shelling
On January 5, the enemy launched one missile strike with two missiles, 52 airstrikes (77 guided bombs), and used 930 kamikaze drones for attacks. They carried out over 4,200 shellings of Ukrainian military positions and settlements.
Frontline situation
In the Kharkiv direction, Ukrainian soldiers repelled two enemy attacks near Vovchansk.
In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attempted to advance four times during the day near Nova Kruhlyakivka, Lozova, and Synkivka. All of the enemy's attacks have been repelled.
In the Lyman direction, the Russian army launched 12 attacks in the areas of Nadiya, Tverdokhlibove, Zarichne, Novoserhiiivka, and Pershotravneve. Three attacks are still ongoing.
In the Siversk direction, our forces repelled one enemy attack near Bilohorivka.
In the Kramatorsk direction, enemy activity resulted in four combat clashes near Chasiv Yar, Stupochky, and Predtechyne. The battle is still ongoing.
In the Toretsk direction, seven combat clashes are ongoing near Toretsk and Shcherbynivka, and five enemy assaults have been stopped by our defenders in the areas of Toretsk and Krymske.
The enemy attempted to break through our defense 50 times in the Pokrovsk direction. Since the beginning of the day, the occupiers have attacked the areas of the settlements of Yelyzavetivka, Vozdvizhenka, Myrolyubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Novyi Trud, Pishchane, Solone, Novovasylivka, Novoelyzavetivka, and Yaseneve. Thirty-one of the enemy's offensive actions were stopped by the Defense Forces, and 19 attacks are still ongoing.
"According to preliminary information, today our soldiers neutralized 300 Russian soldiers in this direction, 130 of them irreversibly. One tank, four BMPs, six units of enemy vehicles, one artillery system, and 10 drones were destroyed. Additionally, two artillery systems, a vehicle, and an enemy tank were damaged," the report states.
In the Kurakhove direction, the enemy attacked our positions near Slovyanka, Petropavlivka, Kurakhove, and Dachne. At present, Ukrainian soldiers have repelled 22 enemy attacks, and three combat clashes are still ongoing.
In the Vremivka direction, our forces repelled 13 enemy attacks near the settlements of Yantarne, Novyi Komar, Novodarivka, and towards Kostiantynopil. The Defense Forces' units stopped five, and eight combat clashes are ongoing.
In the Prydniprovskyi direction, Russian forces attacked our positions once. They received a harsh response and suffered losses.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue operations in the Kursk region. So far, 44 combat clashes are known to have occurred, 35 of which have already ended. The battles are ongoing.
No significant changes occurred in other directions.
"Today, for effective and professional combat work, the soldiers of the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade named after Oleksa Dovbush, the 14th Operational Brigade named after Ivan Bohun, and the 425th Separate Assault Battalion Skelya should be recognized. They are effectively destroying the enemy, inflicting significant losses on them in terms of personnel and equipment," the General Staff concluded.
On January 4, 179 combat clashes occurred on the front throughout the day. That day, the enemy continued to focus their efforts in the Pokrovsk direction.
