Russia-Ukraine war: Frontline update as of August 23

The Ukrainian defense forces continue their offensive operation in the Melitopol direction, fortify their achieved positions, and carry out counter-battery measures. In total, over the past day, there have been more than 30 combat clashes, reports the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Enemy attacks
Last night, the Russian Federation launched another aerial strike with the Iranian UAVs "Shahed-136/131" on Ukraine. Information about the consequences of this terrorist attack is currently being clarified.
Over the past day, the enemy carried out 4 missile strikes and 58 aerial attacks, as well as 60 shelling attacks from multiple rocket launch systems on the positions of our troops and civilian areas. Unfortunately, there have been casualties and injuries among the civilian population due to Russian terrorist attacks. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have also been damaged.
The likelihood of missile and aerial strikes across the entire territory of Ukraine remains high.
Frontline situation
In Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remains unchanged.
In Siversk and Slobozhanske directions, the enemy conducted an aerial strike in the area of Popivka, Chernihiv region. More than 20 populated areas, including Bleshnia, Karpovychi, Orlykivka, Chernihiv region; Rozhkovychi, Seredyna-Buda, Myropilske, Ryasne, Sumy region, as well as Pletenivka, Vovchansk, Vovchanski Hutory, Chuhunivka, Kharkiv region, experienced mortar and artillery shelling.
In the Kupiansk direction, populated areas such as Berestove, Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi in the Kharkiv region, and Tverdokhlibove in the Luhansk region were shelled by enemy artillery and mortars.
In the Lyman direction, the enemy carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Serebrianske Forest in the Luhansk region and Vesele in the Donetsk region. More than 15 populated areas, including Bilohorivka in the Luhansk region, and Zvanivka, Serebrianka, Siversk, Vesele, Spirne, and Fedorivka in the Donetsk region, were affected by enemy artillery shelling.
In the Bakhmut direction, the enemy conducted an aerial strike in the area of Ivanivka in the Donetsk region. Over 20 populated areas, including Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Minkivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Dyliivka, New York in the Donetsk region, suffered from enemy artillery shelling.
In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders successfully repelled attacks by Russian forces in the area of Avdiivka. Populated areas Novokalynove, Stepove, Avdiivka, Siverne, Tonenke, Umanske in the Donetsk region were shelled by artillery.
In the Maryinka direction, the defense forces continue to contain the Russian advance in the area of Maryinka in the Donetsk region. The enemy conducted an aerial strike in the area of Krasnohorivka in the Donetsk region. Populated areas including Maryinka, Pobeda, Yelyzavetivka, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka, Kostiantynivka, Antonivka in the Donetsk region were affected by artillery shelling.
On the Shakhtarsk direction, the enemy carried out aerial strikes in the areas of Vodyane and Urozhaine in the Donetsk region. Over 15 populated areas, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Vremivka, Makarivka, Urozhaine in the Donetsk region, were affected by enemy artillery shelling.
In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the enemy conducted aerial strikes in the areas of Mala Tokmachka, Yehorivka, Novodanylivka, and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. More than 15 populated areas, including Poltavka, Hulyaipole, Hulyaipilske, Charivne, Bilohirya, Chervone, Zatyshshia in the Zaporizhzhia region, were affected by enemy artillery shelling.
In the Kherson direction, the enemy carried out an aerial strike in the area of Romashkove in the Kherson region. Populated areas Novovorontsovka, Kherson, Bilozerka, Veletenske, and Komyshany in the Kherson region, suffered from enemy artillery shelling.
Enemy losses
During the past day, Ukrainian defense aviation carried out 11 strikes on areas with enemy personnel concentration and 2 on anti-aircraft missile systems.
Units of rocket forces and artillery inflicted damage on 3 areas with enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment concentration, 2 ammunition depots, 1 command post, 1 artillery piece in firing position, and 1 heavy flamethrower system TOS-1A of the enemy.
